RAF Defence Aptitude Assessment explained

What is the RAF DAA?

The RAF Defence Aptitude Assessment is a timed aptitude assessment made up of six parts. Different RAF roles require different scores, so useful preparation should build broad ability rather than focus on one favourite topic.

The assessment was previously called the Airmen Selection Test. Official RAF guidance says candidates may complete the actual DAA online or at an Armed Forces Careers Office after their application is accepted.

Preparation needs structure

Practising a few random questions is not a preparation plan

The DAA asks you to switch between different kinds of thinking while working accurately under time pressure. A useful routine needs broad coverage, repeated practice, honest review, and a way to see which skills still need attention.

01

Cover every skill area

Avoid spending all your time on the subjects that already feel comfortable.

02

Practise with purpose

Use explanations and weak area review to understand errors instead of simply counting them.

03

Build calm under time

Move from untimed learning into realistic timed mock sessions when you are ready.

All six DAA skill areas

One focused place to build complete coverage

The practice follows the six broad skill areas described in public RAF recruitment guidance.

Vr

Verbal reasoning

Read carefully, identify what a passage supports, and avoid unsupported assumptions.

Nr

Numerical reasoning

Build faster arithmetic and improve decisions using values, tables, and practical data.

Wr

Work rate

Scan codes, compare details, and maintain accuracy when the pace increases.

Sr

Spatial reasoning

Train rotation, orientation, and visual relationships between shapes and directions.

Ec

Electrical comprehension

Review circuits, components, current, resistance, and core electrical principles.

Mc

Mechanical comprehension

Practise gears, levers, forces, motion, pressure, and other mechanical principles.

Assessment details can change. Always confirm the current process with official RAF recruitment guidance.

Timed mock tests

Move beyond isolated questions and practise switching between skill areas under time.

Weak area review

Return to the topics that need more attention instead of guessing what to study next.

Continue with interview, OASC, RAF knowledge, fitness, and application journey preparation.
